School pupils’ culinary inventions win the Tasty Careers Schools Challenge

Pupils from schools across Wales have been taking part in the Tasty Careers Schools Challenge, a competition that challenges pupils to design food products and dishes that are healthy, sustainable, and commercially viable.

The Tasty Careers Schools Challenge is a National Skills Academy for Food & Drink (NSAFD) Wales initiative in partnership with the Welsh Government funded programme Food & Drink Skills Wales | Sgiliau Bwyd a Diod Cymru. Supporters of this year’s Schools Challenge include Careers Wales, Castell Howell Foods, AMRC Cymru, Leprino Foods and hospitality group Seren.

The competition has been running since 2018, with finals taking place in North and South Wales. The North Wales competition requires pupils to create a new product for a food and drink manufacturer, and the South Wales competition requires pupils to create a new dish for a restaurant group’s menu.

Previous winners have completed the briefs so successfully that their products have gone on to be professionally produced and sold.

This year’s competition has attracted a high number of entrants:  1196 pupils from schools across Wales took part. The South Wales finalists were Ysgol Harri Tudur, Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Cwmtawe Community School, Ysgol Maes Y Gwendraeth, Ysgol Glan y Môr, Ysgol Coedcae and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Myrddin. The North Wales finalists were Ysgol Clywedog, Ysgol Treffynnon, Ysgol Bryn Elian, Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni.

They battled it out in the finals, which took place on March 7 at Conwy Business Centre and on March 19 at Parc Y Scarlets in Llanelli.

The winning schools were Ysgol Dyffryn Aman with their Trio of Welsh Desserts (Welsh Cake Cheesecake, Chocolate and Coffee Ganache and Fruit Cake with Welsh Cake Ice Cream) and Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni with their  ‘Cwci Cefni’ (i.e. cookie dough).

Caryl Milburn, teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni, said:

“The Tasty Careers Challenge has given the pupils an unforgettable opportunity outside of the classroom. They have had a chance to develop their skills by working together with others to develop a new and exciting food product that prepares them for the world of work. I have enjoyed preparing the pupils and am grateful to Tasty Careers and all the partners for the opportunity.”

Rebecca Flower, teacher at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, said:

“As a school we have really enjoyed taking part in the tasty careers challenge this year. The pupils have really enjoyed researching into the Welsh ingredients and the heritage that is linked with our dish. This challenge has helped the pupils build and develop essential skills from communication, team work and research. This is a competition that has shown great skills and dedication from all and we look forward to taking part in future years.”

Mae disgyblion o ysgolion ledled Cymru wedi bod yn cymryd rhan yn Her Ysgolion Gyrfaoedd Blasus, cystadleuaeth sy’n herio disgyblion i ddylunio cynhyrchion bwyd a seigiau sy’n iach, yn gynaliadwy, ac yn fasnachol hyfyw.

Mae Her Ysgolion Gyrfaoedd Blasus yn fenter yng Nghymru gan yr Academi Sgiliau Genedlaethol ar gyfer Bwyd a Diod mewn partneriaeth â rhaglen a ariennir gan Lywodraeth Cymru, Food & Drink Skills Wales | Sgiliau Bwyd a Diod Cymru. Mae cefnogwyr yr Her Ysgolion eleni yn cynnwys Gyrfa Cymru, Bwydydd Castell Howell, AMRC Cymru, Leprino Foods a grŵp lletygarwch Seren.

Mae’r gystadleuaeth wedi cael ei chynnal ers 2018, gyda’r rowndiau terfynol yn cael eu cynnal yng ngogledd a de Cymru. Mae cystadleuaeth Gogledd Cymru yn gofyn i ddisgyblion greu cynnyrch newydd ar gyfer gwneuthurwr bwyd a diod, ac mae cystadleuaeth De Cymru yn gofyn i ddisgyblion greu saig newydd ar gyfer bwydlen grŵp bwyty.

Mae enillwyr blaenorol wedi cwblhau’r briffiau mor llwyddiannus fel bod eu cynnyrch wedi mynd ymlaen i gael ei gynhyrchu a’i werthu’n broffesiynol.

Mae’r gystadleuaeth eleni wedi denu nifer uchel o gystadleuwyr. Cymerodd 1196 o ddisgyblion o ysgolion ledled Cymru ran. Y rhai a gyrhaeddodd y rownd derfynol yn ne Cymru oedd Ysgol Harri Tudur, Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Ysgol Gymunedol Cwmtawe, Ysgol Maes Y Gwendraeth, Ysgol Glan y Môr, Ysgol Coedcae ac Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Myrddin. A’r rhai a gyrhaeddodd y rownd derfynol yng ngogledd Cymru oedd Ysgol Clywedog, Ysgol Treffynnon, Ysgol Bryn Elian, ac Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni.

Bu’r ysgolion hyn yn brwydro yn y rowndiau terfynol, a gynhaliwyd ar 7 Mawrth yng Nghanolfan Fusnes Conwy, a Pharc Y Scarlets yn Llanelli ar 19 Mawrth.

Yr ysgolion buddugol oedd Ysgol Dyffryn Aman gyda Thriawd o Bwdinau Cymreig (Cacen Gaws Pice ar y Maen, Ganache Siocled a Choffi, a Chacen Ffrwythau gyda Hufen Iâ Pice ar y Maen), ac Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni gyda ‘Cwci Cefni’ (h.y. toes cwci).

Dywedodd Caryl Milburn, athrawes yn Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni:

“Mae’r Her Gyrfaoedd Blasus wedi rhoi cyfle bythgofiadwy i’r disgyblion y tu allan i’r ystafell ddosbarth. Maen nhw wedi cael cyfle i ddatblygu eu sgiliau trwy gydweithio ag eraill i ddatblygu cynnyrch bwyd newydd a chyffrous sy’n eu paratoi ar gyfer y byd gwaith. Rwyf wedi mwynhau paratoi’r disgyblion ac yn ddiolchgar i Gyrfaoedd Blasus a’r holl bartneriaid am y cyfle.”

Dywedodd Rebecca Flower, athrawes yn Ysgol Dyffryn Aman:

“Rydym ni fel ysgol wedi mwynhau cymryd rhan yn yr Her Gyrfaoedd Blasus eleni. Mae’r disgyblion wedi mwynhau ymchwilio i’r cynhwysion Cymreig a’r dreftadaeth sy’n gysylltiedig â’n pryd. Mae’r her hon wedi helpu’r disgyblion i feithrin sgiliau hanfodol o gyfathrebu, gwaith tîm ac ymchwil. Mae hon yn gystadleuaeth sydd wedi dangos sgiliau ac ymroddiad gwych gan bawb ac edrychwn ymlaen at gymryd rhan yn y dyfodol.”

Dywedodd Louise Cairns, Prif Weithredwr yr Academi Sgiliau Genedlaethol ar gyfer Bwyd a Diod/Gyrfaoedd Blasus:

“Llongyfarchiadau i Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni ac Ysgol Dyffryn Aman ar eu perfformiad arbennig yn Her Ysgolion Gyrfaoedd Blasus eleni. Gwnaeth yr holl ymgeiswyr argraff fawr ar y beirniaid ond roedd eu creadigaethau yn wirioneddol sefyll allan o ran cynaliadwyedd, hyfywedd masnachol – a blas, wrth gwrs. Gobeithiwn y bydd cymryd rhan yn y gystadleuaeth hon yn ysbrydoli rhai disgyblion i ystyried gyrfa yn sector bwyd a diod rhagorol Cymru.”

Ychwanegodd Nerys Davies, Rheolwr Prosiect Food & Drink Skills Wales | Sgiliau Bwyd a Diod Cymru:

“Rydym yn falch iawn o fod wedi partneru â’r Academi Sgiliau Genedlaethol ar gyfer Bwyd a Diod ar gyfer y gystadleuaeth hwyliog ac addysgiadol iawn hon, sy’n helpu disgyblion i fod yn greadigol gyda bwyd wrth ddysgu am gyllidebu, cyrchu lleol a bwyta’n iach.

“Mae o werth enfawr i’r cyfranogwyr, ac yn rhoi cipolwg gwerthfawr ar y gyrfaoedd sydd ar gael yn y sector bwyd a diod. Mae wedi bod yn wych clywed yr adborth cadarnhaol gan ddisgyblion a lefel y diddordeb sydd yna mewn archwilio dyfodol o fewn y sector bwyd a diod bywiog yng Nghymru.”

Dywedodd John Edwards, cynghorydd ymgysylltu busnes gyda Gyrfa Cymru:

“Mae wedi bod yn wych gweld y disgyblion yn cydweithio gyda chreadigrwydd a brwdfrydedd i gynhyrchu eu cynnyrch, trwy gydol y rhagbrofion ac yn y gystadleuaeth derfynol.

“Mae’r her nid yn unig yn rhoi cyfle i gynyddu dealltwriaeth disgyblion o’r diwydiant a datblygu sgiliau cysylltiedig, ond hefyd yn ehangu eu dyheadau ac yn eu hannog i feddwl am eu dyfodol. Mae hon yn enghraifft wych o sut y gallwn rymuso disgyblion gyda dysgu ymdrochol a diddorol sy’n ymwneud â gyrfaoedd trwy weithio mewn partneriaeth.”
