Many of you will have seen recent signals from the government that apprenticeship funding may be more tightly prioritised in the months ahead. Understandably, this has raised concerns across our network — particularly around the future of management and leadership apprenticeships, which many businesses rely on to develop capability and retain talent.
With demand now exceeding the available programme budget, ministers are considering where funding should be focused to support labour market entry and wider industrial strategy goals. While those priorities are important, there is a real risk that management capability is treated as separate from economic growth, rather than fundamental to it. Effective leadership drives productivity, supports workforce stability and enables organisations to make the most of the technical skills they invest in.
In response, the Chartered Management Institute has launched a petition calling on the government to protect the full suite of management apprenticeships and to broaden employer choice through flexible, shorter training options. We are sharing this with our network because it reflects concerns we hear consistently from employers across food and drink manufacturing.
If you wish to show your support for a balanced apprenticeship system that maintains employer choice, we encourage you to read the petition and sign it if you agree with its aims.As always, NSAFD will continue to engage constructively with the Department and sector partners to advocate for a well‑funded, practical apprenticeship system that works for employers, providers and learners alike.
