We’re all sad to have heard in the news the Honda site in Swindon will be closed by 2021, and people will start losing their jobs as soon as Q3 this year.
It’s devastating for the individual families affected but also for UK engineering as a whole, as highly-skilled workers are will soon be seeking new jobs – possibly outside of engineering. Which is why we’re working with MakeUK (EEF as was) to support Honda to try and ensure we retain as many engineers within the wider sector as possible.
This is where we can help each other. From your various sectors, do you have an unfilled engineering and manufacturing roles from level 2 upwards, and particularly in the Swindon/Wiltshire area? We appreciate that some training would be needed to transfer the skills from one sector to another – but these are already highly-trained engineers, and Honda would support many elements of this. What we really need now is to be able to prove to Honda there is alternative demand for their skills so we can help fuel some investment in the reskilling activity.
Any information you can send me would be really valuable to us, to you and to UK engineering – so let’s work together to transfer the skills from Honda into your sectors when the time is right.
